Research project »Training the Archive« welcomes new digital partner

The scientific research project »Training the Archive« started at the Ludwig Forum Aachen and the HMKV Hartware MedienKunstVerein in Dortmund at the beginning of 2020. Now a new partner has been found at RWTH Aachen University in the Visual Computing Institute headed by Prof. Dr. Leif Kobbelt, so that the next phase of the project can begin.

The Visual Computing Institute of the RWTH Aachen University  (Department of Computer Science) under the direction of Prof. Dr. Leif Kobbelt will take on the programming of the AI in the research project, the development of a Prototype for the concrete application and ideally publish it for free use so that other museums and curators can access and work with the resulting software.

Findings from the project will be discussed in the network and also published in the professional world. In this context, »Training the Archive« will also receive academic support from the media theorist and artist Francis Hunger (Leipzig). Dr. Inke Arns, director of the network partner HMKV, approached him specifically:

“We are delighted that Francis Hunger will enrich the research project with his many years of expertise in the critical examination of the use of databases and the influence of the machine on our social lives.”

The press release on the new Digital Partner is available here (in German):

»Training the Archive« (2020–2023) is a research project that explores the possibilities and risks of AI in relation to the automated structuring of museum collection data to support curatorial practice and artistic production.
